WORCESTER Athletic Club consolidated their position at the top of Midland Track and Field League Division Six with a strong all-round display in Oxford.

They won the round by 32 points from hosts Abingdon after a close-fought contest.

The lead changed hands several times before Worcester sprinted away by winning all four relays.

A number of athletes broke league records with Helen Reeves having a particularly successful day.

Winner of the women’s 100-metre hurdles in a personal best and league record of 17 seconds, she also ran three seconds inside the previous 400m hurdles record only to be edged into second by a fine run from an Abingdon athlete.

Olivia Merry won the ‘B’ long jump, 100m and 200m, while Zoe Styles took the ‘A’ 100m and 200m in English Schools Championships qualifying times.

Ella Gibbons claimed the ‘B’ high jump and ‘A’ long jump and Georgina Greenwood tasted success in the ‘A’ high jump and ‘B’ triple jump.

Merry, Greenwood, Gibbons and Styles equalled the league record by bagging first place in the 4x100m.

Jennifer Nesbitt took 15 seconds off her personal best to set a new league record of two minutes and 19 seconds in the 800m.

She combined with the busy Camilla Barnes (400m hurdles, 100m hurdles and 1,500m), Reeves and ladies’ captain Molly Browne (3,000m and 400m) to win the 4x400m relay.

Shalayna Hutchinson completed a clean sweep of wins in the jumps for the women in the ‘A’ triple jump.

The throwers played their part in the women’s victory with Holly Wootten winning the javelin and ‘B’ 800m.

Gill Repton (discus and javelin), Melanie Garland (hammer, shot and discus) and Katie Martin (hammer and shot) provided support.

The 400m hurdlers got the men’s team off to a flying start. Richard White was second in the ‘A’ race, while Andy Kinney won the ‘B’ event as well as competing in the long jump and javelin.

Kinney also won the ‘B’ 400m and combined with Paul Maguire (‘A’ 400m), David Jubb (1,500m) and Josh Carr (1,500m) to win the 4x400m relay.

Edwin Elmhirst (first, ‘A’ high jump and ‘B’ triple jump) and Hakim Shepherd (first, ‘B’ high jump and second, ‘A’ triple jump) were supported by sprinter Ryan Upfield, first in the ‘B’ 200m, in the long jump. Upfield joined Hugo Hickson, Luke Kinsey (‘B’ 100m) and Alex Bradnick (first, ‘A’ 100m) to win the men’s 4x100m.

Lewis Roberts (800m and 3,000m), Dave Hall (3,000m), and Phil Bullock (800m) completed the track team with Quentin Elmhirst (javelin, shot and discus) and Pete Stewart (hammer, shot and discus) covering the throwing events.
