Ben Stokes will almost certainly return to England colours for the first time since last September during the forthcoming one-day international series against New Zealand.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at five of the all-rounder’s best international performances:

Australia, Perth 2013

Stokes withstood the might of Mitchell Johnson, the unerring accuracy of Ryan Harris and a dry, cracked WACA pitch in just his second Test appearance to post a gutsy fourth-innings 120 in a losing cause, the only occasion an English batsman went past three figures in the 2013/14 Ashes. That trip may have been a nadir for many in the touring party but Stokes bloomed and justified the growing hype around him. His return to Perth during the ODI leg of the tour saw him collect man of the match honours with a fine all-round performance.

New Zealand, Lord’s 2015

Having already rescued England from 30 for four with a fearless 92, Stokes further stamped his authority on proceedings in the second innings with the fastest Test century at HQ. England led by only 98 with six wickets in hand on his arrival at the crease but Stokes made light of the pressure situation with a barnstorming 85-ball ton that tilted the balance in the home side’s favour. Stokes, who had endured a patchy past 18 months, then followed up his 101 by taking three for 38 to clinch victory for England.

South Africa, Cape Town 2016

Now very much a mainstay in England’s set-up, Stokes lit up Newlands with a highly audacious 258 from 198 deliveries that featured no little belligerence and left a slew of milestones in his wake, including the top score by a Test number six and the English record for the number of sixes in an innings after clearing the rope 11 times. His 399-run stand with Jonny Bairstow was the highest sixth-wicket stand in Test history as the pair rescued England from a tricky position in a match which eventually petered out into a high-scoring draw.

Bangladesh, Chittagong 2016

There was no stand out century or five-for from Stokes but this performance at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium convinced many that England’s premier all-rounder could be a force on the subcontinent. Stokes whittled away Bangladesh’s lower order on a turning pitch before defying the Tigers’ coterie of spinners with a crucial knock of 85. With the Test on a knife edge on the final morning, Stokes fittingly took the final two wickets to give England victory by a slender margin – one that would have been improbable without the Durham man’s intervention.

Australia, Edgbaston 2017

Stokes’ ODI career has surprisingly not been littered with the highlights and unforgettable moments that he has produced in Tests – and it was not until his 45th match, five years after his debut, that he registered his first hundred – but he is still a fulcrum for England and his 102 not out conspired to send Australia crashing out of the Champions Trophy. Stokes crunched 13 fours and two maximums as he and Eoin Morgan broke the back of a chase that raised hopes England could go all the way on home soil, until they came a cropper against Pakistan in the semi-final.
