Masters champion Sergio Garcia has named his baby daughter after the hole at Augusta National where he made a vital par 12 months ago to keep his bid for victory alive.
Garcia was two shots behind Justin Rose when he drove into some bushes on the par-five 13th – named Azalea – and was forced to take a penalty drop.
However, the 38-year-old Spaniard went on to save par and eventually beat Rose on the first play-off hole to win his maiden major title at the 74th attempt.
Garcia was due to speak to reporters about his title defence at 8am local time (1300GMT) on Tuesday in Austin, Texas and kept his word despite having to take part in the teleconference from a hospital room.
“It’s been an eventful morning,” Garcia said at the time. “About an hour and a half ago Angela’s waters broke so we’re at the hospital right now, kind of checking in.
“It’s very exciting and nerve-racking at the same time. It’s kind of surreal. I’m excited and a little nervous for Angela and the baby to make sure everything goes well.”
