SPORTS coverage in your Worcester News has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Steve Carley - sports reporter and Worcester City correspondent - landed a top gong at the Birmingham Press Club annual awards last night, being named Midlands Sports Journalist of the Year.
The win saw Steve triumph over fellow nominees from the likes of the ITV News Central, the Lincolnshire Echo and our very own Tom Guest, who was nominated for his efforts covering Worcester Warriors and the county cricket club.
Meanwhile, political reporter Tom Edwards was also shortlisted, in the Columnist of the Year category for his weekly take on council matters in the county, The Source.
Worcester News editor Peter John said: "Steve’s reporting of Worcester City won high praise from the judges and considering that Worcester City are by no means the sort of glamour team that other Midlands sports journalists get to write about, his success is even more notable.
"Special mention to Tom Guest and Tom Edwards, who were nominated for sport and columnist awards."
Chairman of the judging panel, Peter Lowe, who is managing editor at Sky News, praised the work of all of the nominated journalists.
"There was excellent work in all types of media and disciplines," he said.
"But we were particularly struck by the way in which local newspapers – among the most hard-pressed institutions in the ever-changing media landscape – are still delivering sharp and original journalism for the benefit of their readers.
"Long may it continue."
