GEORGE Williams admits he got a few odd looks when he celebrated Worcester City’s FA Cup draw in the confines of the Loughborough University library.

The right-back, who is studying sports science and management at the university, was forced to keep his emotions in check when the clubs were paired together in the first round proper.

It will be the club’s most prestigious, and lucrative, game in a decade and one that could yet be shown by the BBC.

“I was in the library watching it so I had to keep my voice down,” the 21-year-old said. “It was really nerve-racking but when I saw the tie I had a little cheer to myself but I had to keep it a bit muted because a few people were watching.

“We are all delighted. I was watching the draw and we couldn’t have asked for anything more.”

Williams wasn’t alone.

Manager Carl Heeley almost sent his dog scampering for cover when former Manchester United defender Phil Neville, who was doing the draw on BBC Two, pulled out City’s ball number 71.

He explained: “I was sitting at home and saw the big clubs come out like Portsmouth, Bristol City and Preston.

“I was getting closer to the edge of the sofa and all I saw was ball number 71, I didn’t hear Worcester City and I went off sprinting round the dining room table. The dog was looking at me like I’d gone stupid!”

It’s amazing what such things can do to people. My heart was pumping listening to the draw on the radio and I merely report on the club, never mind having played more than 500 games for them.

As far as Williams is concerned, it will be another milestone in a fledgling career that has already seen him win a silver medal with Great Britain at the World University Games in Russia.

The Blue and Whites’ reigning player-of-the-season said: “It’s a great draw for the club, a lot of people are going to be watching and it will be a huge event.

“For me, I am really excited to test myself against a very good club and it’s a great opportunity to show what we can do.

“We are not going to go there and get rolled over, it’s a chance to put on a good performance.”

But, for all the buzz the draw has created for the Aggborough club, they will have to put the match to the back of their minds on Saturday and switch their attention to a Vanarama Conference North trip to Leamington.

Williams added: “Leamington are going to be right up for the game because we beat them in the FA Cup, but our main focus will be beating them again.”
