DEFENDER Tyler Weir is expected to sign a new deal with Worcester City after returning from a brief stint in Australia.

The 24-year-old linked up with Brisbane Premier League club Rochedale at the end of May. But Weir, who made 39 appearances for City last term, has returned to Ledbury.

Now City joint-manager Carl Heeley is keen to secure the services of Weir for the Aggborough- based side’s new National League North campaign.

“Tyler is back in England and we had a verbal agreement with him before he went to Australia,” said Heeley. “I am sure we can now get the deal with Tyler tied up. I can’t see any reason why that can’t be concluded.

“Tyler felt that going to Australia was something he had to do but now we can get things sorted.”

Weir missed just one game prior to breaking a metatarsal in a 1-0 home loss against Bradford Park Avenue in January, and was out of action for more than two months.

City will be reporting back for pre-season training on July 2 and Heeley has spoken to a host of players he is keen to bring to the club.

“In the early parts of the close season, you meet and speak to lots of potential targets and sometimes put offers to them,” explained Heeley.

“It can take quite a bit of energy speaking to players before they agree to make a commitment to a club.

“We are competitive at Worcester City – we have to be – but we also have to be patient.

“It’s important not to panic into making a signing and that’s something we never do.”

Heeley is looking forward to a short break before the new season gets into full swing.

“Matt Gardiner is going on holiday and then I will take some,” he said.

“It’s important we’re not both away at the same time.

“It will be nice to switch off the telephone and not think about football for a time.”
