WORCESTERSHIRE Rapids skipper Daryl Mitchell knows his side must learn from the poor start to their Royal London One-Day Cup campaign.

Rapids travel to face Group ‘A’ high-flyers Surrey at the Kia Oval today (2pm) after three successive defeats have left them languishing at the bottom of the section.

Mitchell is aware the Rapids need to make better starts with the bat because they have lost early wickets in all their RLC games.

They will be looking for their first win in the competition after a wash-out against Durham and defeats at the hands of Yorkshire, Somerset and Northants.

Mitchell said: “The games come thick and fast and the more successful you are, the more games you are playing and it’s a positive to be playing those amount of games.

“We’ve got Surrey and then Gloucestershire in the 50- over competition, while a big quarter-final in the NatWest T20 Blast is not too far away.

“We need to get more of a foundation with the bat. We have to find a way of getting better starts.”

Worcestershire could still qualify for the knock-out stages by winning their final four group matches.

The Rapids will need to bounce back from Sunday’s demoralising 21-run loss against Northamptonshire at New Road.

A hat-trick from the first three balls of the match from Joe Leach reduced Northants to 0-3 and the visitors crashed to 19-6 before recovering to post 126. The Rapids were then dismissed for 105 in the 32nd over.

Worcestershire director of cricket Steve Rhodes has named his squad for the televised clash with Surrey which takes place under floodlights.

It is the same side which appeared in Worcestershire’s defeat against Northamptonshire — plus opening batsman Richard Oliver. Charlie Morris is again rested as the Rapids continue their rota tion policy with the pace bowlers.

The Rapids will have little time to recover from the game at the Oval as they take on Gloucestershire at home in the same competition tomorrow (10.30am).

Surrey have named a 12- man squad which includes former County stars Gareth Batty and Steven Davies.
