WORCESTERSHIRE assistant coach-bowling coach Matt Mason has revealed his ambition to one day become a head coach in his own right.

But the Australian is delighted to be part of the current New Road backroom team and cites Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes as “a really important part of my coaching development.”

Mason has been at New Road for more than a decade, first as a eve reliable paceman and then as part of the coaching set-up assembled by Rhodes since he hung up his spikes during the 2011 season.

The 40-year-old said: “Do I eventually want to be in charge whether it’s with Worcs or someone else?

Yes, like I was as a player, I always want to challenge myself and be coming a head coach somewhere some day is definitely my ambition.

“I wouldn’t like to say it was anywhere else but Worcester because I can never see myself anywhere but this club. But I guess at some point, I need to look at opportunities.

“For now, I’m really happy where I am and Bumpy is really an important part of my coaching development. He has been very good, as have everyone at the club, in teach ing me what I need to learn.

“He gives me every opportunity to get involved and express my views and implement some of my own things and ideas as well as teaching me some of the stuff I wasn’t aware of, the fine bits of his role which is a very all encompassing role.

“It is not until you work closely with Bumpy that you realise how much work there is to do.

But I think it is an exciting fu - ture for myself. I’m getting better as a coach all of the time. We are very lucky we’ve got a fantastic group of players to work with that are only going to grow and develop. I’m very keen to be a part of that.”

Meanwhile, Tom Fell and Joe Leach finished as Worcestershire’s highest run-scorer and wicket-taker in the Championship for 2015.

Fell passed 1,000 LV= CC runs in a season for the first time, while Leach just edged out Jack Shantry to finish as the leading wicket-taker with 59 in the LV= CC.
