County stay quiet on Kabir decision

WORCESTERSHIRE have come to a decision about their stance on the Kabir Ali saga — but will not be making an announcement any time soon.

The New Road board of directors met last night to discuss the want-away bowler’s status with the club after he refused to return to training at the beginning of the month.

The 29-year-old is desperate to leave the County and has set his heart on a move to Hampshire.

Last autumn the former England bowler was given permission to speak to other counties after to be released from the final season on his contract but only with £60,000 compensation.

The Rose Bowl side are believed to have offered the swing bowler a three-year deal but aren’t prepared to pay the full amount. It is thought that Hampshire did make an offer of compensation in the autumn but it fell well short of what Worcestershire wanted.

But now Kabir is trying to force the issue to get his wish after staying away from training. The 2008 leading wicket-taker was due to return to training on Monday, January 4, but he informed the club, after taking legal advice, that he would not be returning stating he was in a contract dispute with the County.

Worcestershire chief executive Mark Newton said: “The decision has been made. But we are not ready to make any announcements. It is a very complex matter and we will make an announcement when the time is right.”
