WORCESTERSHIRE director of cricket Steve Rhodes believes new signing James Cameron will add competition for places in the New Road batting line-up.
The 23-year-old Zimbabwe-born all-rounder has signed a two-year deal and will join up with his new team-mates in March after playing for Australian grade outfit University CC.
Cameron, who played for Zimbabwe in the 2004 Under 19s World Cup, has been recommended to Rhodes by several people including player-bowling coach Matt Mason who watched himwhen he returned to his native Perth last Christmas.
The left-handed batsman, who also bowls right-arm medium pace, holds a British passport and played second XI cricket for Essex, Surrey and Middlesex last season — including a trip to Worcestershire when he scored 42 for the Brit Oval side in a rain-affected draw at the Royal Grammar School’s Flag Meadow ground.
But his signing for the County is his first professional contract.
“I think that he can be a destructive batsman in one-day cricket, but I don’t want to pigeon-hole him as a one-day player,” said Rhodes.
Cameron added: “I have always dreamed of being a professional cricketer and I am thrilled to take this ch-ance with Worcestershire. I see it as a real challenge and cannot wait to come over in a few weeks time.”
