Duo pen new County deals

JACK Shantry and Richard Jones have committed their futures to Worcestershire after penning new deals at the county.

Unorthodox left-arm seamer Shantry has signed deal that will keep him at New Road until the end of the 2013 campaign.

Jones has put pen to paper on a two-year deal after an impressive start to the campaign.

Shrewsbury-born Shantry, who made his first-team debut last season, has taken 25 first-class wickets this term, while in the one-day arena his figures have been even more impressive as the opposition batsmen struggle to deal with the 22-year-old’s accuracy and his unusual action.

The medium-pacer was Worcestershire’s leading wicket-taker in the Friends Provident t20 campaign with 18 at little more than 19 apiece.

Jones, who was nearly consigned to the scrapheap two years ago, has taken 38 championship wickets and the 23-year-old has improved on his career-best twice this season.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: “Jack has made real progress this year in all formats of the game and has more than earned a new contract with us.

“Richard has developed well as a genuine quick bowler. His early season form was outstanding and he continues to learn the arts of his trade.

“Along with many of our other younger players, they have really gained from the amount of cricket they have played and both are model professionals.”
