WORCESTERSHIRE’S battle for promotion to Division One of the Specsavers County Championship is going to the final match of the season.

The County are top of the table by six points ahead of the home clash with Durham from Monday (10.30am).

It is six points that will be needed to ensure a return to the top flight and a fifth promotion in 11 years under Steve Rhodes — and 19 to go up as champions.

Worcestershire could have sealed their Division One return today had Nottinghamshire defeated Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

But Northants kept their own hopes alive by winning by 124 runs after Notts had been set a 314 target.

Worcestershire are now on 216 points, six more than previous leaders Notts who take on Sussex at Hove in their final fixture.

Northants are on 197 and could reach 221 with a maximum-point haul in their final match at Leicestershire.

But should they drop any points then the number of points Worcestershire need will also be reduced accordingly.
