BRENDON McCullum and Michael Powell laid the foundation for Glamorgan's seven-wicket win in the Twenty20 Cup opener against Worcester-shire under the Cardiff floodlights last night.

McCullum, the New Zealand wicketkeeper, shared in a second wicket stand of 101 in nine overs with Powell as they chased down a target of 164.

Though both McCullum, with 63 from 26 balls, and Powell (53 from 40) were out in the space of three overs -- dismissed by the accurate Ray Price -- Glamorgan still managed to get over the winning line with five balls to spare.

David Hemp and Nicky Peng combined in a 41-run fourth wicket partnership to see Glamorgan to their first white ball county win this season.

After Worcestershire won the toss, Graeme Hick top-scored with 37 off 23 balls, as they were restricted to 163-7 as Andrew Davies finished with figures of 3-34.

Even at 40 years of age, former England star Hick showed he can still be effective in the shortest form of the game.

He lost partners Lou Vincent and Ben Smith to catches from attacking shots in the opening four overs, but Hick's class told. In one over he gleaned 14 from James Franklin.
