OVERSEAS signing Phil Hughes is set to arrive at New Road on Friday and will be in contention to face Middlesex in Worcestershire’s home Clydesdale Bank 40 home clash with Middlesex on Sunday.

The Aussie left-hander’s much-anticipated arrival will hand the County a boost as they look to build on an encouraging start to the 40-over competition.

Having originally signed for the entire season, Hughes was subsequently summoned to a series of Cricket Australia training camps, which delayed his New Road arrival and saw Steve Rhodes draft in Mike Klinger as cover.

South Australia captain Klinger has now returned Down Under, but will be back in England in six weeks as part of the Australia ‘A’ touring squad.

Chief executive David Leatherdale said: “Phil will be arriving in England early on Thursday morning, in time to practice with us on Friday and will be in contention for Sunday’s CB40 game with Middlesex at New Road.

“Mike flew back to Australia on Sunday night and he fitted in well in the dressing room during his short stint and added maturity to the team.

“It has been a tough time for opening batsmen with the recent weather, but his 60-odd on the last day against Sussex showed his potential.”

Dircetor of cricket Rhodes added: “Mike was tremendous for us — he is a really likeable character and a good player. The boys have really enjoyed having him in the dressing room and we wish him well for the Australia ‘A’ tour back here in six weeks or so.

“We are now looking forward to having Phil with us. He has a massive point to prove and he is desperate to do well and force his way back into the Australian team, which is where he ought to be. I’m sure he will be exciting to watch.”
