WORCESTERSHIRE have fought off interest from Derbyshire to hold onto the services of highly-regarded pace bowler Richard Jones.
The academy-produced 25-year-old has put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension to remain at New Road until the end of the 2014 season.
Since joining the club’s academy in 2003, Jones rose through the ranks, making his first-class debut in 2007 before cementing his place as a regular in the County’s four-day side.
Jones has already racked up 30 LV= County Championship Division One scalps in nine appearances this term, including an impressive 6-32 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge on the opening day of the season.
Jones said: “I’m thrilled to commit the next two years to Worcestershire. It’s a special place to play cricket and I’m looking forward to the challenges it holds.
“We have a young squad and a great dressing room atmosphere and I’m excited to be a part of that for at least the next two years.”
Director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: “We are delighted Richard has taken the decision to extend his contract with Worcestershire.
“He is a home-grown talent who has come through our academy system. He has made a good start to his first-class cricketing career and continues to improve.”
