JACK Shantry produced a brutal display of clean hitting in reaching his second County Championship hundred and steering Worcestershire to maximum batting points against Gloucestershire at New Road.

The 28-year-old peppered the boundary with fours and sixes in a stunning display to complete a memorable recovery by the hosts, who had been reduced to 34-5.

Worcestershire were eventually bowled out for 439 with Shantry last man out for a run-a-ball 106 containing six sixes and 11 fours.

Then the County attack was rewarded for their perseverance with four wickets in the evening session as the visitors moved onto 226-5 from 78 overs.

Graeme van Buuren completed his hundred in the final over of the day from Alexei Kervezee.

Shantry's second 50 spanned just 14 deliveries and two overs from Craig Miles were despatched for 44 runs.

Last man Charlie Morris defended stubbornly while all 69 runs in the partnership were scored at the other end.

Shantry was bowled by Liam Norwell for a career-best 106 and left the ground to a standing ovation.

His previous hundred was in the promotion-clinching victory over Surrey at New Road in 2014.

Shantry's efforts followed another memorable innings by Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who extended his overnight 153 not out to 169 before he was caught behind off Norwell.

His career-best score spanned six hours and 281 balls and included 25 fours.

Shantry went to his 50 with a six over mid-wicket off Miles and then cut loose as the bowler conceded 23 and 21 runs in successive overs.

He went to three figures with a towering six off Miles over long-on.

Shantry then shared the new ball when Gloucestershire replied and made an important breakthrough in his fourth over.

Opener Chris Dent (5) was bowled by the 28-year-old with 16 on the board in the eighth over.

But the second-wicket pair of Gareth Roderick and van Buuren provided stubborn resistance.

Roderick was first to his 50 off 115 balls with six fours and van Buuren followed him in the next over off 11 deliveries with six boundaries.

But the County claimed two quickfire wickets in the post-tea session.

Roderick (60) was lbw to Brett D'Oliveira to end a stand of 120 in 45 overs.

Then an inswinging full-length Shantry delivery trapped former Worcestershire player Michael Klinger (8).

Hamish Marshall raced to 34 but then Joe Leach brought about his downfall at 191-4 with Ross Whiteley catching at short mid-wicket.

It became 208-5 when George Hankins attempted to pull a Ed Barnard delivery and gloved a catch to wicketkeeper Ben Cox.
