ANDRE Adams and Luke Fletcher finished with four second-innings wickets apiece as Worcestershire fell to a 92-run defeat in their LV= County Championship Division One opener at Trent Bridge.

Nottinghamshire required just over an hour today to take the four wickets they needed for victory, dismissing Worcestershire for 299 in their pursuit of 392.

Opening bowler Fletcher started the ball rolling in the day’s first over and also claimed the final wicket of Alan Richardson, with the rain closing in, to finish with 4-53.

In between, New Zealander Adams weighed in with the other two wickets to post figures of 4-90.

Nottinghamshire took 19 points from the game and Worcestershire just three in a game where the batting improved as the game went on after both sides were bowled out cheaply on a wicket-laden first day.

Fletcher made a breakthrough with the sixth ball on the morning of the fourth day.

He pinned Shaaiq Choudhry lbw with a delivery that at first looked to be heading down legside only to swing back enough to win a positive verdict from umpire Tim Robinson.

That saw David Lucas join James Cameron in the middle and both quickly offered half-chances.

First left-hander Cameron, on 11, pushed hard outside his off-stump at Adams and Michael Lumb, at third slip, could not hold on as the ball flashed through high and at pace. Lucas was reprieved when Adams, also at third slip, failed to pouch another edge, this time from Fletcher’s bowling.

But, after the Worcestershire pair put on 33, Lucas went for one shot too many and played on in attempting to force Adams through the offside.

That was the end of the visitors’ hopes and Adams was soon in the wickets again when he mopped up a low caught-and-bowled chance to oust Richard Jones.

It should have been all over as the drizzle increased in strength when Neil Edwards shelled a comfortable catch at second slip with Cameron on 26.

But, just two balls later, Fletcher’s leg before appeal was upheld as Richardson departed for a duck and Notts had taken the final eight Worcestershire wickets for 64 runs.

Daryl Mitchell (102) and Moeen Ali had put on 178 runs for the third wicket to push Worcestershire to within 157 runs of their target on Saturday.

But a lapse in concentration from Moeen saw the left-hander dismissed for 94 and three more wickets fell in the last five overs of the third day.
