SHAAIQ Choudhry, one of the heroes of Worcestershire’s crucial LV= County Championship Division One win at Lancashire, has been ruled out of the match against Sussex, which starts today at Hove (11am).

At Old Trafford, the slow left-armer took 4-38 and 2-16, alongside Moeen Ali’s 12-wicket match haul, as Worcestershire span their way to an important first win of the four-day campaign.

However, the 26-year-old has been sidelined by a sore foot and leg-spinning all-rounder Brett D’Oliveira will step up for today’s contest on the south coast.

New Road director of cricket Steve Rhodes said: “We will be taking the same 12 that went to Lancashire, apart from Shaaiq, who has a sore foot, so Brett comes into the squad to replace him.

“It was a terrific win up at Lancashire and credit for that must go to our spinners, as well as Matt Pardoe and Ben Scott, but overall it was a real team effort.

“Hove is normally a pretty good wicket, but if it is dry there is a chance we could play two spinners — we’ll have a good look at the pitch this morning and make a decision after that.

“Whenever you play cricket, you want to pick up points and the more we can get, the better it will be in terms of us staying in Division One.”
