A FABULOUS first-half performance from Worcester City saw them secure their first away win of the season at a chilly Northolme.

Goals at either end of the first-half from George Williams and Sean Geddes took all three points in Lincolnshire as the Blue and Whites continued to keep up the pace with the play-offs.

Before the game, Worcester made one change to the starting line-up from the midweek 1-1 home draw with Boston as keeper Nathan Vaughan returned for Jose Veiga.

City began positively, clearly encouraged from Tuesday’s game, and it took less than two minutes to get a decent effort in as Mike Symons turned on the edge of the box before firing on target.

Minutes later, Worcester finally scored their first goal away from home in 10 matches, a run stretching back to March.

A long ball over from the left wing reached captain Williams, who hit a thumping drive in off the underside of the crossbar.

The goal buoyed City. This was also partly due to Trinity’s narrow midfield, which was being exploited by the wing play of David McDermott and Williams.

Gainsborough would have been level soon after but for a fantastic recovery tackle from Graham Hutchison while Darryn Stamp was one-on-one with Vaughan.

City began to retain possession and, after neat build-up play with McDermott, Sean Geddes was in acres of space in the box and slotted the ball under the onrushing Jan Budtz to double the lead.

It was the last action of the game for McDermott, who was forced off with a tight hamstring.

The hosts were clearly rattled and it was not long before substitute Nick Wright clipped the ball onto the far post from a rapid breakaway.

Nine minutes of the second-half passed before the next real opportunity for the Blue and Whites.

Geddes found himself free of his man on the edge of the box thanks to sub Jordan Murphy, signed on loan from Walsall, and had a touch before hitting a glorious chance for a third wide.

Fifteen minutes later, Gainsborough got themselves back into the game.

A Paul Beesley strike was spilled by Vaughan as Gainsborough countered and the ball fell right at the feet of Conor Higginson, who could not miss.

Gainsborough almost equalised immediately after.

A bouncing long ball eluded everyone before Billy Lobjoit looped a header over Vaughan and against the upright.

The game was completely open and, within the space of a minute, Worcester hit the woodwork through Wright.

It was frantic end-to-end stuff. With five minutes left, the hosts hit the post again but Worcester held on for their first away win of the season.
