WORCESTER City boss Carl Heeley is confident his players won’t be overawed in Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Coventry City (2pm).

Heeley says City will be almost at full-strength for their date with destiny with the League One outfit in front of the BBC television cameras.

City’s first round derby is one of eight matches featured in a special BBC Final Score programme.

Heeley said: “We are going to a fabulous stadium with a large support and I am hoping we can give a good account of ourselves and not get overawed by the occasion.

“I am confident the lads won’t get overawed because we have got some good footballers who work very hard for each other and could easily make the step up to play full-time football.

“We have a strong squad and it’s going to be difficult to select the starting 11 and the seven substitutes for the match.

“I have to give full credit to the players — they have made mine, Matt Gardiner and John Snape’s jobs very difficult in picking the squad.

“There is huge belief in the squad and we will give it our best shot and, with the players we have, there is a genuine belief that we can make something happen.

“Goalkeeper Jose Veiga has got a nasty gash on his knee and will miss out — so we have signed a couple of extra goalkeepers.”

Heeley has been busy this week after his wife, Vicky, gave birth to their second daughter, Mia, on Tuesday morning.

Gardiner and Snape took training earlier this week but Heeley is now full focused on trying to shoot down the Sky Blues.

He said: “We have had a chance to watch Coventry once since the draw was made and we are aware of their strengths and we will be picking a team we think gives us the best chance of getting a positive result.

“It has been fantastic to get a plum tie and we have probably got one of the best teams in the first round draw.

“Somewhere in the country there will be a shock this weekend in the first round of the FA Cup.

“We know there is at least one cup shock every year in the first round and we are hoping that Worcester City will be the team pulling it off.”

City last reached the first round proper in 2005 and, on that occasion, they reached the second round before going down 1-0 to Huddersfield Town.

Heeley said: “This is the first time I have been a manager in the first round – we have been beaten twice before in the final qualifying round.

“We will have a training session on Saturday and then we will keep all the players together before travelling to the game on Sunday.

“It’s important we enjoy occasions like this and the extra focus from the television cameras.

“We don’t get things like this every day and the build-up is great for everyone who has worked so hard for Worcester City.

“Only a few players at the club will have experienced this before but it’s important that we embrace it and enjoy it.”
