WORCESTER City could use the money generated from the sale of George Williams to fund a new left-back.

City’s reigning player-of-the-season has joined Barnsley and made his debut for the League One club as a second-half substitute in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Preston.

While the fee is undisclosed, manager Carl Heeley has insisted it is a good deal for the club and that the Blue and Whites will benefit should the 21-year-old right-back be sold on in the future.

Heeley is now seeking to replace Williams, with a left-back seemingly in the frame following Tyler Weir’s switch to the right.

Shabir Khan and Danny Jackman have both filled in on the left of defence in recent matches but the City boss is looking at other options.

Heeley, whose side visit Hednesford Town tomorrow (3pm), explained: “We will certainly look to replace if we can because a big part of us is the attacking threat we posed with George and Tyler bombing on. We will have a look at it and see what we can do.

“Shabir has had a lot of injuries and his body’s feeling it and it would be too much to ask for him to be the regular left-back from now until the end of the season.

“He’s a good player and he’s good to have in the squad and if we can get some games out of him, then brilliant, but longer term we probably need to replace.”

Heeley accepts more of his players may be attracting interest from higher-ranked clubs following their FA Cup exploits but says any deals will have to be right for City.

“If people want to sign them they’ll have to come and meet our valuation of that player,” he said.

“Ultimately, none of them will be going out on trial, we don’t need to do that because they’ll get their offers. If that is done, as with George, they’ll go with our best wishes.

“A lot of that is out of our control, they’re good players and are doing well. While we’ve got them at the club it’s great but if we lose any of them we have to move on.

“We are already working on the next batch of lads that we think have got the ability to come in and develop.”

Academy duo midfielder Dean Waldron and left-back Jamie Smith have both been on the bench for recent Conference North matches.

Meanwhile, Sunday’s sponsored walk to Tamworth by City fans Niels Eiriksson and Millie Gaffey was postponed due to illness and the weather.

The pair now intend to walk from Worcester to Cheltenham for the league match against Gloucester City on Sunday, January 18.

They are raising money for the club’s supporters’ trust and their plans to build a new stadium at Perdiswell.
