WORCESTER City need to add more players to their ranks if they are to maintain a promotion challenge in Conference North, according to manager Carl Heeley.

City head into tomorrow’s match against third-placed Guiseley at Aggborough (3pm) sitting 11th in the table following the drab New Year’s Day goalless draw at Hednesford Town.

Although the Blue and Whites are only four points shy of the top five, Heeley reckons they need to strengthen over the winter months.

A replacement for George Williams is top of the shopping list but the City boss, who has also drafted in striker Connor Collins from Fairfield Villa, is looking to beef up his team.

He said: “We’ve raised everybody’s expectations this season with the cup run and league form but we’ve got to not lose sight of the fact that the main aim is retain our status at this level of football.

“I’m sure we’ll comfortably do that but once you’re in that situation you want improve. There’s a lot of other good sides looking to get in those top five places and I think we’re one of them.

“I think we need to add one or two players because it’s going to be a physical and mental drain for us but if we can do that then of course we can stay in the mix.

“We are actively looking to add one or two to the squad but they have to be the right players.

“In my opinion, George Williams was by far the best right-back at this level and probably the division above. It will take us time to adjust and get extra players in to replace him. Whether we get another George Williams is a big ask.”

While happy with the point at Keys Park, Heeley felt referee Amy Fearn did not help his side’s cause.

“I think the referee missed three blatant penalties,” he said. “Keeper Dan Crane fumbled the ball and pulled Tristian Dunkley down to get to it, Jordan Murphy got wiped out when he was about to score and Wayne Thomas got kicked on the head five yards out.”

Worcester will be looking to build on their point at Hednesford by continuing their impressive home record which has seen them lose just once in the league at Aggborough since February.

Full-back Tyler Weir should be fit to return after missing the Hednesford match following a minor car accident.

Meanwhile, former City inside-forward Jimmy Dunn has died at the age of 91.
