WORCESTER City have added a new striker to their wish-list in a bid to get back on the goals trail.

The Blue and Whites have failed to score in their last three games, as well as drawing a blank in the abandoned Boxing Day match against Hednesford Town.

Prior to that, City had found the target in 16 consecutive matches, scoring more than two in 11 of those fixtures.

That coincided with the arrival of Sean Geddes, whose ‘rabona’ goal against Barrow in November was voted second best of 2014 by Sky Sports viewers.

Worcester’s current struggle in front of goal has come in the aftermath of right-back George Williams’ sale to League One Barnsley, a player they are also looking to replace.

Following a hectic holiday schedule, manager Carl Heeley is stepping up the search to strengthen his squad ahead of Sunday’s match against Bradford Park Avenue at Aggborough.

“I’m really hopeful that by the next time we play we’ll have one or two fresh faces in,” the City boss said. “That’s certainly the aim but, that said, we’re not in a situation where we have to panic and sign players for the sake of it.

“We want to try to get the players that we think will complement and improve the squad.

“I think we’ve just been a little bit shy of goals of late and we’re looking for a specific type of forward.

“We made a couple of enquiries that came to nothing over the holiday but hopefully something might turn up trumps in the next week.”

One option for City would be a striker similar in style to Mike Symons, whose hold-up play has been a key facet in the team’s success this season.

The 28-year-old was rested against Hednesford on New Year’s Day and City struggled to keep the ball in the final third, with Daniel Nti as the furthermost striker in their 4-2-3-1 system, until Symons’ second-half introduction.

Nick Wright has been used in that role but appears more comfortable in wider positions and working the flanks.

Heeley said: “Symmo just needed a rest, he’s pretty much played all of the games and we’ve got to freshen it up.

“We’d played a few days earlier and the conditions are testing with the pitches. You’ve got to swap it around as much as you can.”

Keeper Nathan Vaughan would likely have been fit to face Guiseley on Sunday following a groin injury but defender Shabir Khan (groin) would have missed out.

The City manager added: “It will be nice to get back on the training ground this week and the lads who’ve had little knocks have an opportunity to get fit.”
