WORCESTER City have made their first new signing for next season after beating off competition to recruit former Hednesford Town skipper Darren Campion.

The tenacious 27-year-old left-back joins City after four successful campaigns with their National League North rivals.

Joint City manager Carl Heeley said: “Darren was high on our list of priorities this summer and we are delighted that he wanted to come and join the club after stiff competition for his signature from other interested parties.

"He is a natural leader who we believe will strengthen our defence and add quality going forward.”

Campion was a youth teamer at Birmingham City before playing four League One games for Carlisle United.

Birmingham-born Campion returned to the West Midlands in 2009, turning out for Solihull Moors and Redditch United before joining Hednesford and clocking up more than 200 appearances.

Meanwhile, former Worcester midfielder Jay Denny has agreed non-contract terms with his home-town club Telford United after being released by the Aggborough tenants.

Telford, who were relegated from the Conference last season, have also signed ex-City midfielder Tom Thorley from Hednesford.
