SEAN Geddes shot to fame with his memorable rabona goal but, despite winning a national award, the Worcester City midfielder admitted he still hasn’t quite come to terms with his accomplishment.

Geddes, whose effort came against Barrow in the FA Trophy last season, picked up the Huck Nets goal of the season gong at the Non-League Paper’s National Game Awards in partnership with the Non League Footballers’ Association.

The event at Fulham’s Craven Cottage saw the 23-year-old honoured after he audaciously chipped Barrow keeper Aaran Taylor from just inside the penalty area.

The video went viral, racking up almost two million views online.

Geddes could not collect his award in person due to being on holiday in Spain.

“I didn’t realise I was up for an award but I really appreciate it and I’m just sorry I wasn’t able to be there to collect it,” he explained.

“I was shocked by all the feedback about the goal if I’m honest. I didn’t even think it was being filmed.

“I really couldn’t have hit it any better and I’ve got a friend in Norway who has said I was all over the news there too so that was unexpected.

“I think my team-mates were a bit shocked that I went for it in a game but I do practice it in training. The ball fell nicely to me and I just thought, ‘Why not?’”

Geddes’ goal earned comparisons to Erik Lamela’s rabona strike in Tottenham’s 5-1 Europa League win over Asteras Tripolis.

As the ex-Manchester United trainee plans to repeat his trick, he claims the goal overshadowed another impressive effort.

“I scored a pretty good free-kick later in the game as well but that seems to have been forgotten about now unfortunately,” added Geddes.

“The only problem with scoring a goal like that is people think it’s a fluke when they see it. I can’t blame them. The pressure is on now for me to do it again.”

The NLFA are delighted to have sponsored the National Game Awards.

With a new membership package coming soon to include income and career-ending insurance, the NLFA are becoming a very important role in the lives of non-league footballers.
