THE goal for Worcester City attacking midfielder Sean Geddes was to get fitter this summer – and he’s already shed a stone-and-a-half.

The former Stourbridge player has been running six miles in his lunch hour and is planning to tackle the Birmingham half-marathon in October.

Geddes snapped up 17 goals during his maiden season with City but recognised he needed to bolster his fitness to be even more influential.

He scored a Rabona goal against Barrow in the FA Trophy which has been viewed more than 12million times across the world.

“I have just had a really good season but I recognised I had areas which I needed to try to improve,” said the former Manchester United trainee.

“One of the biggest things I noticed was I have needed to get fitter so, instead of me lasting for 80 minutes in matches, I could run for longer. Matt Gardiner gave us all a set programme to do over the summer and when we have been training together as a squad it has also been very hard.

“But, as Matt said, if you put in the hard work now, you will get rewards during the season and that’s what I am trying to do.

“Two weeks before the start of pre-season, I started running and doing seven-minute miles for six miles on a Wednesday during my lunch break.”

Geddes is employed by a company in West Bromwich which makes parts for aeroplanes and vehicles.

“I have a nice six-mile run around a canal which takes me past a prison and leads me back to my work,” said Geddes.

“I have lost a stone-and-a-half over the summer and I feel a lot better and a lot fitter. I didn’t think I would enjoy running but, strangely enough, I have.

“I am now planning to do the half-marathon in Birmingham in October and asking all the lads to sponsor me.”
