JOINT manager Matt Gardiner believes Worcester City are stronger than they were in pre-season 12 months ago.

Gardiner is impressed by the fitness levels and commitment shown by City’s players, who are gearing up for their National League North opener at Gainsborough Trinity on August 8.

“We are definitely stronger than last year and the league will be stronger this time too,”

said Gardiner. “We have been looking at a few things during pre-season, like team shapes and positions, and making sure everyone is fit and ready for the opening league game.

“The players we have brought into the club this summer have gelled and the spirit in the squad is excellent. There is strong competition for places.”

Joe Bates and Dean Waldron were on target for a youthful City side who recorded a 3-1 win in a friendly at Droitwich Spa last week.

Gardiner has taken part two of his UEFA ‘A’ Licence at St George’s Park and was on the residential course with former top-flight stars Des Lyttle and Danny Cadamarteri and ex-Hereford United midfielder Luke Webb.

He added: “If you look at our division this season, there’s the likes of FC United of Manchester, Fylde and Solihull. It’s going to be a strong league and our aim is to do better than last season.”

Joint boss Carl Heeley gave his verdict on the new Worcestershire FA Senior Cup, which was played in pre-season as a knockout affair.

“It’s a new thing the Worcestershire FA are trying out and there are certain restrictions because you can’t have more than five unregistered players and you can only make three changes,” said Heeley.

“It’s not ideal in pre-season but offers competitive matches. The games used to seem to come at an inconvenient time so a pre-season tournament is certainly worth exploring.

“Perhaps the tournament could have more clubs involved in future years but it’s definitely a positive thing.”
