WORCESTER City take on Lowestoft Town at Aggborough today looking to chalk up their first win of the National League North season (3pm).

But they go into the game without a recognised rightback after losing two defenders in as many days with a third away on holiday.

Tyler Weir has started the last two games but a sickening clash of heads saw him taken to hospital midway through Tuesday’s match with Tamworth.

Kyle Haynes missed the midweek clash, lining up for Southern League Premier side Redditch United, and following subsequent talks between the player and manager Carl Heeley, he has now been released.

Summer signing Sam Minnion showed his versatility by filling the right-back berth for much of pre-season but has missed the start due to holiday commitments.

Jamie Smith and Dean Waldron could have filled in but have been sent out on loan to Rushall Olympic and Halesowen Town respectively.

But Heeley said there was no selection crisis, particularly having watched midfielder George Nash perform so well in the second-half against Tamworth.

“It won’t be a problem and I’ve every faith in the lads that we have available,” the City manager said. “George Nash did well the other night and is certainly an option.

We also have Danny Jackman available and he has played there so we have cover.”

Heeley said Weir was likely to be out for a couple of weeks after clashing with Tamworth’s Curtis Strong on Tuesday. But he added there was good news after doctors completed their checks on the 24-year-old.

“He has had ten stitches in his head but thankfully there’s no break to his cheekbone and no concussion,”

Heeley said. “He hopes to be back in a couple of weeks but obviously we will consult with the medics before making any decision, the safety of the player has to be the first consideration after a clash like that.”

Heeley added that the reason why Weir appears to have come off worse is that the Tamworth player had the momentum.

“I had a good view and it looked to me that both players were fully focussed on the ball. I’ve watched it again and not changed my view. Their lad’s got a lot of momentum and that’s why I think Tyler came off worse, but it was one of those unfortunate things that happen in football.”

Lowestoft head to Aggborough after back-to-back victories.

Heeley added: “They will be full of confidence after winning their first two games against Telford and Alfreton – two clubs that will be expecting to challenge this season.”
