WORCESTER City joint managers Carl Heeley and Matt Gardiner are set to run the rule over former Scunthorpe United and Derby County goalkeeper James Severn.

The 23-year-old was expected to train with the club last night as he looks to get back into the game after being released by the League One side at the end of last season.

City’s hand has been forced after Dan Lloyd-Weston picked up a shoulder injury in the 2-1 midweek defeat at Alfreton Town, a game which Nathan Vaughan missed due to him working shifts.

Severn was second choice keeper at The Iron where he played alongside City striker Deon Burton. Capped at under17, 19 and 20 level for England, he has been training with Derby County.

City head to Corby Town tomorrow with a number of players vying for selection.

Strikers Ryan Rowe and Tris Dunkley are available, while midfielder George Nash is back in the frame after missing the trip to Alfreton.

The City bosses also have teenagers Dean Waldron and Jamie Smith back from loan. The former impressed on his first start on Tuesday and Heeley sees a bright future for the youngster which has prompted another midfielder to move on.

“With the extra options that we currently have, we’ve decided to release Rob Elvins,” the City boss said. “It’s a shame for Rob as he has been a great servant but we needed to balance up the payroll.

“Dean has come in and impressed and we feel he can develop into the player capable of filling the void left by Rob.”

Heeley also explained that Jacob Rowe’s involvement was likely to be limited with the defender working in London and unable to make midweek games or training.

With the arrival of experienced trio Burton, Lee Hughes and Shaun Harrad, he said on-loan striker Nikolay Todorov had returned to Nottingham Forest.

“With the players we have brought in it was clear that Nikolay wasn’t going to get the opportunities he needed,” Heeley added. “We were honest with Forest who said that they needed him to be playing so he has gone back.”

City’s two main injury doubts for tomorrow are Dan Nti who picked up a dead-leg at Alfreton and defender Tyler Weir who is expected to make his return from a calf injury in next week’s FA Cup match at Holbeach United.

Corby Town went unbeaten in their opening six National League North games but have since lost three of their last four. On Wednesday they went down 3-2 at home to Boston United, a game that saw them hand a debut to on-loan Leicester City defender Cedric Kipre.

Their leading scorer is former Worcester City and Redditch United midfielder Ashley Sammons.
