WORCESTER City have qualified for the FA Cup first round for the second successive campaign after their shock 2-1 win at Gateshead.

The Aggborough tenants beat Midlands giants Coventry City 2-1 at the Ricoh Arena last season and took Scunthorpe United to a replay and mammoth penalty shoot-out in the second round.

Now they have qualified for the competition proper again and the draw will be at 7pm tomorrow live on television on BBC Two with sides from Leagues One and Two now in the hat.

Having already dispatched previously-unbeaten Vanarama National League North leaders Solihull Moors after a replay at the last stage, City deservedly upset their north-east hosts cheered on by around 130 away fans.

Despite challenging for the play-offs in the National League, Gateshead fell behind to a 24th-minute opening goal from experienced former Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday forward Deon Burton.

Burton swooped from an Ellis Deeney corner and, although ex-Hereford United striker Ryan Bowman levelled for the Heed in the second half, Burton struck again from another Deeney corner to ensure City avoided a replay this time.

The team, jointly managed by Carl Heeley and Matt Gardiner, had needed two matches to get past lower-ranked Holbeach United in the second qualifying round.

Burton, who turns 39 today, certainly stepped up to the plate in the absence of suspended top-scorer Lee Hughes.

City will be number 49 in tomorrow's cup draw and the first-round tie will be played over the weekend of November 7 and 8.
