MANAGER Carl Heeley believes his players have achieved what is “realistic” for Worcester City after a “rollercoaster” campaign.

A 2-2 draw against AFC Fylde at Aggborough on Saturday saw City finish in 17th place, two points above the drop zone.

Heeley admitted they had “let themselves down” at times this season as they notably notched up 12 red cards.

But, having staved off relegation and reached the first round of the FA Cup, the City boss said there were plenty of positives to build on next season.

“I think we have achieved what is realistic,” he said.

“We wanted to retain our status and get into the first round of the FA Cup, so we have achieved our goals, and we started the season winning some silverware (Worcestershire FA Senior Cup).

“We have had a number of problems to deal with this season that have ultimately impacted on our league position.

“But it does not matter if we had finished five or six places higher because we are still in the division next season.

“It has been a rollercoaster and we have played some great football at times and been disappointing at other times.

“I think next season we have got to try and tinker with it (the squad) slightly to get the blend a little bit better, so we can hopefully strive for more consistency because on our day we have competed with the best sides.”

Worcester were trailing 2-0 to Fylde courtesy of a quick-fire double from Danny Rowe just after the half-hour mark.

But the hosts battled back as Dan Nti struck on 67 minutes before Lee Hughes scored a late penalty.

Heeley added: “We had to work really hard to stay in the game, particularly in the first half, as their passing and movement were exceptional.

“But, that said, we didn’t get close enough to them.

“The first goal has come from our corner and, because we haven’t won the second ball on the edge of the box, the ball is in the back of our net within 10 seconds.

“But that’s what they do — they are not third in the league for nothing.

“But credit to us. We could have folded in the second half but we have come out, had a right go at them, got ourselves back in it and probably finished the stronger side.”

Deon Burton made his final appearance before hanging up his boots and Heeley paid tribute to the former Derby County striker.

“Deon thoroughly deserves it (a standing ovation) as he has been a great pro and has had a great career,” he added.

“It has been a privilege to have had a player at the club with that experience and calibre but he is such a down-to-earth lad, so we wish him all the best.”
