MANAGER Carl Heeley says he is “a good way down the line” to adding new faces to Worcester City’s squad for next season.

Centre-back Graham Hutchison is the only player to sign for Worcester since the campaign came to a close in April.

Despite the lack of transfer activity, Heeley revealed there were “loads of players” who wanted to join the Vanarama National League North outfit.

But, with two months to go before the new season gets under way, the City boss insisted he was in no rush to get them to sign on the dotted line.

“We have had loads of conversations with players and there are loads who want to come to us but so far no deals have been completed,” he said.

“There are a number of players we want to bring to the club and they have indicated they would like to join us, so we are a good way down the line.

“It is very easy to go and say we will sign all these players straight away. But I want to give ourselves as much time as possible.

“The season doesn’t kick off until August 6, so there is no need to panic.

“I don’t read anything into clubs signing six or seven players early on. Naturally, people think they are going to be strong but it does not mean anything.

“We will bide our time and try to get the best types of players we are looking for.”

Heeley refused to confirm Chasetown manager Dave Stringer’s claims right-back Rhys Thompson was on his way to Worcester.

But City’s boss says he is confident of recruiting several players he feels his side were lacking last season as they finished 17th, two points off the relegation area.

“There are certainly at least two or three players we feel we will be able to bring to the club,” Heeley said.

“They are players we have had in mind from day one, based on what I thought we were missing last season and they are the types of players to fill those roles.

“But we have not got deals done yet only because a lot of players are on holiday at the moment and that is a big influence.

“When you have been playing football for eight or nine months, you want to have a bit of time away to recharge your batteries, so you don’t want to be pestered all the way through the summer.”

Heeley added: “The deals could be done and dusted this afternoon or tomorrow, I don’t know.

“I have indicated I want a decision by a time but it is different for all of them.

“If it does not happen today or tomorrow, then I am certainly not going to lose any sleep over it.”
