WORCESTER City have been dealt a big blow after defender Alex Gudger signed for Vanarama National League North rivals Brackley Town.

Since arriving from Rugby Town last summer, Gudger quickly cemented himself in manager Carl Heeley's starting 11.

The 23-year-old featured 46 times, including a series of stand-out performances at both centre-half and left back.

He was also recently awarded sponsors’ player of the season and Heeley was aiming to offer him a new deal ahead of the 2016/17 campaign.

However, Gudger has decided to make the switch to Brackley, who finished two places below City in the table, narrowly avoiding relegation.

He revealed the Northamptonshire side provided him with a better balance with football and work commitments.

“I would just like to say a big thank you to Carl and everyone at Worcester City for the opportunity I’ve been given this season,” said the former Rugby captain.

“Our results have seen a mixture of ups and downs but on a personal note, every minute of my time at Worcester has been enjoyable.

“However the time is now right for me to move on to a new challenge that enables me better balance with my football and work commitments.

“Once again thank you, and all the very best for the future.”

The move sees Gudger link up with former Nuneaton Town manager Kevin Wilkin, who has also signed ex-Boro midfielder James Armson from Solihull Moors.

“I know James and Alex well from my time at Nuneaton of course and I am pleased they are now at Brackley,” said Wilkin.

“Both were young players coming through and both were on the bench for me when Nuneaton contested the play-off final.”
