WORCESTER City fans have slammed football chiefs’ proposals to create a ‘six-team play-off’ for promotion.

National League bosses are considering opening the end-of-season competition up to clubs finishing in sixth and seventh.

But City’s supporters have criticised the idea, with one saying it would be a “disaster” to clubs who can’t afford to be promoted.

Tim Munslow said: “That could mean a team that finished seventh being promoted through the play-offs, which is a nonsense and does away with the idea of having a league in the first place.

“Not in favour and I’ve never been a fan of the play-off system.”

Liketoknow said: “I think it would be a disaster for a lot of clubs who quite clearly can’t afford promotion and the upgrades that come with it.

“Not every team in that league would want to be involved with promotion issues.”

Brooksider said: “I am no fan of play-offs at all, promotion from a league should be on merit.

“Why should any club who finishes fifth in the league be given a lifeline to get promoted?”

Thesecondjack felt stretching the play-offs to six teams would be “too much”, but some supporters said other changes could be made to how sides can gain promotion.

Auldreekie said: “I would put the clubs in 21st and 22nd position in the National League in a mini-league with the two clubs in second position in North and South.

“This would give a mini-league of four clubs to play each other home and away with the winner having a place in the National League.”
