WORCESTER City manager Carl Heeley admits he’s “reasonably happy” with what he’s seen from his squad after their opening three warm-up matches.

City started with a 1-0 win at Stourport Swifts and drew 1-1 at Stratford Town before suffering a 5-1 defeat against Championship giants Aston Villa on Saturday.

But Heeley says City must “iron out” a few areas before launching their Vanarama National League North campaign at home to Harrogate Town on Saturday, August 6 (3pm).

“You can win all your pre-season games but results don’t really matter,” he said. “It matters on August 6 when you start the league season and play for points.

“There are things I am reasonably happy with and others I probably expected to be a little bit better. We have to try in the next few weeks to iron out the things we are not that happy with and make decisions on players we’ve had on trial.”

Former Alfreton Town keeper Nick Draper is among those on trial with City and vying for the jersey vacated by Nathan Vaughan, who joined Solihull Moors.

Draper played for Lincoln City, Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Grimsby Town and pulled off several decent saves against Villa.

But Heeley says he lives in Humberside and might struggle to get to Bromsgrove as he has transport problems.

“Nick pulled off a couple of great saves against Villa but the problem is he’s based in Grimsby and doesn’t drive,” said Heeley.

“At the moment, he’s reliant on friends and family to take him around so I will need to have a chat with him to see if I can move this on any further.”

Also turning out is teenage Birmingham City attacker Edji Mbunga, whose academy scholarship was ruined by injury.

Mbunga, who came to Blues as an under 12 from a Gloucester City development side, suffered a knee injury and Achilles problem but has signed a six-month contract at St Andrews.

Heeley said: “Birmingham have given Edji a six-month pro deal just to give him an opportunity to see if he can get some minutes under his belt.

"He’s a player Ian King (coach) knows and Birmingham have given us permission to have a look at him to see if those minutes could be with Worcester.”
