EXPERIENCED defender Sam Oji insists Worcester City’s first victory of the season will “mean nothing” if they don’t produce the goods at Bradford Park Avenue today (3pm).

Since slumping to the foot of National League North, Oji believes City have shown “great resilience” to climb up to 17th.

They came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 against Gainsborough Trinity last Saturday before beating Alfreton Town 5-3 on Tuesday to end their run of eight matches without a victory.

Resurgent Worcester travel to the Horsfall Stadium to take on basement boys Bradford, who are one of only two teams yet to record a victory this season.

And 30-year-old Oji urged his side to keep “plugging away” and improving their performances.

“Winning is a habit as much as losing is, so you want to get that monkey off your back as quickly as possible,” he said.

“I thought we showed great resilience to come back on Saturday and we built on that on Tuesday.

“I would not say it was a complete performance as we let in some goals but it was probably the best all-round display.

“But it means nothing if we go away today and don’t turn up.

“We need to have that consistency in our game so, whether it is getting a draw or a win which we will be going for, we have got to keep picking up points and plugging away.”

With top scorer Lee Hughes back in the team, City have become more of an attacking threat.

However, having conceded five goals in their last two games, Oji admits they need to tighten up at the back.

“The strikers have done their job as they have converted their chances but we should have done better in defence, myself included,” said the former Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient centre-back.

“If we do our job and the strikers do theirs, we have got a winning formula.

“I didn’t think we defended too badly. We just made the wrong decisions at the wrong moments that gave them their goals.

“If we cut out silly mistakes, we will give ourselves the best opportunity to win the game.”

Fit-again defensive duo Oji and Graham Hutchison were recalled against Alfreton with James Chambers and Tom Sharpe out.

Chambers (hamstring) is likely to return to action along with captain Danny Jackman (calf).

Keeper Ryan Boot, 21, has rejoined from Port Vale on an initial one-month loan.

Manager Carl Heeley said: “We currently have two keepers at the club but in the early part of the season neither Nick (Draper) or Ethan (Ross) have managed to cement the number one shirt and I have found myself being undecided on which one to play.

"I think bringing in Ryan and, with the added security of knowing what he is capable of, was an opportunity that needed taking.”

Heeley will hope to have Sharpe, whose wife was taken to hospital following a fall at work, back but Junior English starts a three-match ban for his red card against Gainsborough.
