EXPERIENCED midfielder Danny Jackman hailed stand-in skipper Lee Hughes as an “example to everyone” after “leading” Worcester City to a 1-1 draw against Tamworth.

The return of the former West Bromwich Albion and Coventry City striker was a welcome boost for City who had scored just once during his four-match ban.

And the 40-year-old soon showed the Vanarama National League North strugglers what they had been missing as his 25-yard strike flew into the top corner on 37 minutes.

“That’s what he has done throughout his whole career,” Jackman said.

“He is fantastic as you only need to give him half-a-chance and he will stick it away.”

With Jackman assisting John Snape in the dugout following the resignation of Carl Heeley as manager last weekend, Hughes was also handed the captain’s armband.

Jackman added: “Hughesy has been a big miss for us this season when he hasn’t played so it is good to have him back now and leading the line from the front.

“And as captain I thought he set a really good example to everyone.”

A penalty from Danny Newton just before the break denied 18th-placed Worcester all three points but “anxious” Hughes said he was pleased to keep his proud record of not losing as skipper intact.

“I was a bit anxious taking it on as I have only been captain three times,” Hughes said.

“That was when I was at West Brom and I had a good record as I never lost.

“So I was a bit worried but I tried to lead the team, lead by example and give information on the pitch which hopefully I did.”
