DEFENDER James Chambers hopes “it is all coming together at the right time” for Worcester City in their fight to remain in Vanarama National League North.

The Blue and Whites ended their 18-match winless with a 1-0 away victory over Stalybridge Celtic last weekend.

And the 36-year-old says it has given his side a morale boost ahead of their final six league games, starting with a trip to 17th placed AFC Telford United on Saturday (3pm).

Despite going more than four months without a victory, Chambers insisted he did not worry as he had seen the team make progress.

But the former Leicester City, Watford and West Bromwich Albion player said he was “delighted” to end their wretched run of form.

“To finally see the progress we have been making result in three points is great,” he said.

“We have been progressing over the past five or six games. We have not had the results, but there have been bits of our play which have slowly been getting better.

“There is a bit more understanding between the lads and I think Saturday was the best I have seen us play for a while.

“We used the ball quite well and we were pretty good in limiting their chances, so overall it was a solid display.”

The win courtesy of Jordan Murphy’s 48-minute strike saw City move two points above third-from-bottom Gainsborough Trinity.

“When the team is not playing well and you can’t see what we are working on then that’s the time when you worry,” Chambers continued.

“But I felt there were parts of our play that were coming on. I felt elements of our defensive organisation and some of our attacking play were pretty good, so hopefully it is all coming together at the right time for us and we can get enough wins to avoid the drop.”

Chambers, who played at centre-back alongside Graham Hutchison, said he was pleased to secure City’s first clean sheet in more than two months.

“Stalybridge changed their attacking line-up midway through the second half, so there was a bit of a difference when the some of the quicker lads came on,” he said.

“They hit the post, so it could have been different if that had gone in, but overall as a team we defended well.

“In general, if you have got a good defensive shape and the back four and midfield players press the ball well, it gives the team confidence that we are not going to concede.

“We have got players like Jordan who are putting chances away so it does give the team confidence when we are keeping clean sheets.”

Chambers added: “As it is a results business, sometimes you don’t have that time to progress your team and morale in the camp.

“But you can see we are progressing in our play, which is the key thing.

“I am happy that we gave a good account of ourselves on Saturday. If we do that more often than not we should win a few more games between now and the end of the season.”
