JORDAN Keane has urged his Worcester City team-mates to resist going “gung-ho” in their efforts to claim a “vital” three points against Curzon Ashton tomorrow (3pm).

The versatile 23-year-old admits his side, who are battling to avoid relegation from Vanarama National League North, have got a tendency of going “straight for goal” when they get in possession.

But the ex-Stoke City academy ace believes building attacks “more patiently” will help Worcester beat the visitors.

“The pitch at Bromsgrove isn’t the biggest and we make it even tighter with the way we press, especially in the middle,” said Keane who is expected to start in central midfield alongside captain Danny Jackman.

“But once we win the ball back we need to make more passes before we go forward.

“Sometimes we are a bit gung-ho when we get the ball back as we go straight for goal.

“Sometimes it is worth keeping it a bit longer and building our attacks more patiently.”

City are two points above third-from-bottom Gainsborough Trinity who host seventh-placed Stockport County tomorrow.

And John Snape’s men will be desperate to chalk up a win before their final four games against sides vying for promotion.

City beat Curzon 2-1 in the FA Trophy in November before holding them to a 1-1 draw in the league at the Tameside Stadium in January.

The 12th-placed Greater Manchester outfit have pulled off some impressive results this season, defeating leaders AFC Fylde 3-2 and securing wins at play-off chasers Stockport and Chorley.

Keane said City, who have lost three of their last four games, will be looking to keep it tight in a bid to edge out their opponents.

“Staying up is the goal and I think we are all confident we can do it,” he said.

“We are two points ahead of Gainsborough and have got a better goal difference so we need to keep the goals down.

“Even when we are playing against the big teams we will be looking to keep a clean sheet and build from there.

“If we win 1-0 or draw 0-0 then we will take it but getting three points will be vital for us over the next five games.”

Defender Tom Sharpe is expected to be back after missing last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at AFC Telford United through illness.

Winger Chekaine Steele is battling to be fit after more than a month out with a hamstring problem but the versatile Junior English (hamstring) remains sidelined.

“We got three points (against Stalybridge) and should have taken at least a point (against Telford),” Keane added.

“But I think it is possible to pick up three points against Curzon and then we have got a tough run of fixtures which we will tackle head-on.”
