JUNIOR English believes Worcester City can do “something nobody would expect” as they plot to turn AFC Fylde’s promotion party into survival celebrations today (3pm).

City are one point adrift of safety and face a daunting final-day trip to the newly-crowned Vanarama National League North champions.

With Gainsborough Trinity visiting 13th-placed FC United of Manchester, Worcester, who have a better goal difference than their relegation rivals, may need to win at Mill Farm to avoid the drop.

The chances of claiming three points appear to be slim, though, as Fylde have lost just one league game at home all season.

But English says he knows from experience how winning a title can affect players’ mentality and reckons the Lancashire side’s success can work in City’s favour.

“When I was at Solihull last year we were in this same situation,” said the 31-year-old.

“After we won the league we had Hednesford who had already been relegated but they beat us 2-1 at Damson Park.

“So I know how it feels when you have done what you need to do and play a team who are fighting for their lives.”

Worcester came from behind to claim a 3-2 victory at Fylde last term and ran Dave Challinor’s men close in a 2-1 defeat at the Victoria Ground in December.

“We played Fylde at Bromsgrove and deserved to get something out of the game,” English continued.

“If we go there and play like we did against Stockport, which was one of our best performances, you never know.

“Hopefully their players will be on their holidays and they won’t take it that seriously which will give us a chance.”

City have won once in more than five months and slumped into the bottom three following their agonising 2-1 defeat to Salford City last Saturday.

However, English insists their sorry form will have no bearing on the contest as they look to throw everything at Fylde to retain their sixth-tier status.

The versatile player is hoping to shake off a hamstring problem to start against the table-toppers.

“It just comes down to that last game of the season now and everyone will give their all,” said English.

“If we were to go down it would not be because of our effort and application.

“Our game management could be better.

“We have been unlucky but you can only be unlucky so many times.

“When it keeps happening every week we need to look at ourselves and we could have been mentally stronger against Salford.

“We should not be anywhere near that bottom three because of what we have got in the changing room.

“But we go to Fylde and you never know what can happen in football.

“It is not a given that Gainsborough are going to beat FC United.

“They are playing in front of a big crowd and will want to impress them so even a point might do it.

“It is just about keeping our heads up and hopefully going to Fylde and doing something that nobody would expect us to do.”
