A WORCESTER City Supporters’ Trust director has slammed the club’s bosses for treating fans and shareholders with “utter contempt”.

And he urged City’s under-fire board to “immediately” call an extraordinary general meeting in a bid to change the constitution of the cash-strapped club.

Rich Widdowson’s comments came after the Blue and Whites plummeted three levels into the Midland League Premier Division — the ninth tier of English football.

City’s chiefs confirmed they had contacted the Football Association and the National League “at the beginning of March” over their intentions to make the drop despite the team’s efforts to avoid relegation.

Chairman Anthony Hampson and his directors also said it was a “pragmatic” and “sensible” move to give the club “the best chance of survival”.

But Widdowson hit out at the decision, insisting the trust had been kept in the dark over the club’s plans.

“The chairman treats the fans and the majority of shareholders with utter contempt,” Widdowson continued.

“Dropping down the league is not the worst thing to happen but dropping down with absolutely no idea whatsoever what they are going to do is truly incredible.

“They have got no drive and think everything is just going to be alright by dropping into a lower league and thinking they are going to win every game. That’s their plan.”

City have been in exile since 2013 and are waiting for the trust’s application to build a ground on Perdiswell Park to be heard by Worcester City Council’s planning committee.

The trust believe becoming a Community Benefit Society (CBS) would help raise the capital for the proposed new stadium and boost negotiations with Worcester City Council to use the land at Perdiswell Park.

But their bid to change the club’s constitution was scuppered following an unsuccessful shareholders’ vote last summer.

“They need to call an EGM to change the constitution immediately so people who want to help the club survive can do so rather than forever unfulfilling promises,” Widdowson said.

“They have not involved supporters, shareholders or anyone before coming to this decision and to allow fans to make long journeys to games in the hope of staying up is utterly contemptuous.

“They should stand in front of shareholders and tell people why and be prepared to answer questions.

“They should have done that before to be open and honest but that’s the way this club is run. Anthony has a history of avoiding questions.”
