JUNIOR English has departed Worcester City to sign for newly-promoted National League North side Leamington.

The versatile player was named manager’s player and players’ player of the season after being an influential figure for City last term.

The 31-year-old, who made 38 appearances, scoring three goals, said he had turned offers from five clubs as he looked to help Worcester to stave off relegation.

However, with City preparing for life in Midland League Premier Division after dropping three levels English has been tempted by a move to Leamington who secured promotion from Southern League Premier Division.

“‘I am looking forward to a new challenge at Leamington and playing for (manager) Paul Holleran who I’ve heard a lot of good things about,” English said.

“The league will be tough next season but I am more than confident we can hold our own with the players and management we have here.

“I’m also looking forward to playing in front of supporters who always create a good atmosphere.”

Holleran admitted he had been “stalking” the former Solihull Moors stalwart for the last six years.

“It’s not the first time we have tried to get Junior English to Leamington, it brings to an end probably a six year stalking process,” Holleran said.

“Junior is a player we have admired for a long time.

“He’s always been in the top two tiers of non-league football, his locality suits us and his versatility suits us.

“Obviously with losing Jack (Edwards) as well, to be able to bring in Junior, who is very effective whatever position he plays in, and with similar versatility but with 10 years of experience of Conference football, I’m absolutely delighted to be able to bring somebody of his calibre to the football club.

“I’m sure he will be a real favourite here.”
