JOINT managers John Snape and Lee Hughes will cast their eyes over almost 100 players keen to secure a deal at Worcester City today.

The Midland League Premier Division outfit will hold their first team and under 21 trials at the University of Worcester.

Snape, Hughes and City’s head of youth development Luca Gabriel will carry out the training sessions before deciding which players will be part of their plans for next season.

Worcester have already made 10 new signings but Snape is looking forward to seeing who emerges from the open trials having been “inundated” with applicants.

“We had to close the registration for the trials due to the interest,” Snape said.

“We have got to be realistic in terms of how many players we can actually bring in and be fair when it comes to working with them.

“We have currently got 44 for the first-team trials and 48 for the under 21s and we are still getting inundated with people wanting to be involved.

“After the trials we will have another review and see what we need before we start the season.”

City are also looking to boost their junior set-up and held trials for several of their age groups earlier this month.

“The trials were very enlightening and there was a positive influx of new players coming through the youth system,” Snape added.

The Blue and Whites players are expected to begin training next month as they prepare for their first pre-season clashes at Leamington and Gornal Athletic on Tuesday, July 11.

After travelling to Pershore Town on Saturday, July 15, City take on Evesham United in the Worcestershire FA Senior Cup semi-final at the Jubilee Stadium on Wednesday, July 19.

They complete their pre-season programme with visits to Sutton Coldfield Town on Tuesday, July 25, and Halesowen Town on Saturday, July 29.

“We have got some interesting games coming up,” Snape said.

“When we begin pre-season with the new faces we have signed we will see if they like us and we like them and hopefully we will move forward.

“We have got players going for the under 21s so I can see others being added to the squad to challenge for the first game of the season.”

Snape added: “At the minute everything is positive. Lee is very enthusiastic and I am looking forward to working with him, Luca and also Aaron White who has been working very hard behind the scenes to bring the right people to the football club.”
