MATT Gwynne hopes his Worcester City move is the career break he has been waiting for after being promised their number one shirt.

The 24-year-old keeper from Bromyard hopes to move through the non-league pyramid system with his new club after leaving Midland League Premier Division rivals Westfields.

“I’ve always wanted to play as high as possible and I’ve always been confident in my ability but in football sometimes it’s about luck,” said Gwynne who had played for Fields since leaving neighbours Hereford in the 2012-13 season.

“I’m hoping I can keep improving and go through the leagues with them which I believe the club will achieve and be back where they belong.

“For a goalkeeper I’m not even in my prime yet and I know there are areas I still need to work on to improve but I feel the move is the best for me and I’m prepared to learn.

“The gaffers have made it clear they've brought me in because they want me as number one but I’m going to have competition.

"If they think I haven’t performed they are going to take me out of the side and I’ll have to work to get back in.

“That’s exactly how it should be which I’m sure will bring out the best in me.”

Gwynne said the rotation policy implemented at Fields last season made it hard for him.

He added: “There’s nothing more frustrating than performing and then being left out of the side due to rotation as it kills your momentum.

“Rotating as a keeper isn’t ideal. Being with Keiron (Blackburn) last year we understood we were both going to be involved but obviously you want to play.

“Especially as a keeper you need a run of games and when you're in and out it’s hard to keep at the best you can be as it takes a couple of games to get your decision-making and things like that.

“It was a hard decision for me to leave Westfields as I have been there for a long time but that was one of my main reasons to decide to move.

"We have come close to promotion on many occasions but have never achieved it and you ask yourself why as we’ve had great players there.

“After I heard Worcester were interested in me my mind was made up.

"And after speaking to John Snape (joint manager) I knew it was the club for me due to the professionalism and the plan he has for the club.

“I think if a team like Worcester came in for any player at this level and even higher they would struggle to turn it down. With the fanbase and the structure of the club you’d jump at it.

“The money was never anything to do with my move. It’s about being at your best.”
