FULL-BACK Tyler Weir is eyeing the captaincy and a place in central midfield as he vows to be the “main guy” at Worcester City next season.

The long-serving 26-year-old insists he wants to “run the show” for City in the Midland League Premier Division after pledging his future to the troubled club.

Weir skippered Worcester towards the end of last term and appears to be the leading candidate to become City’s new captain after Danny Jackman joined Redditch United as player-coach.

“Hopefully I will be captain next season as I want to be the leader on and off the pitch,” said Weir who has made 230 appearances for City.

“I was captain for a few games last season and that was a good experience for me.

“This year I want to be the main guy and have people looking up to me thinking he has played more than 200 games for this club and decided to stay despite dropping three leagues.

“I haven’t really spoken about it (the captaincy) but if Snapper (joint boss John Snape) says I can be captain I will be more than grateful to take it and it would mean a lot to me.”

Weir, who has previously played for Hereford and Gloucester City, has spent much of his career playing in defence.

But the Ledbury-based player says he is hoping to get the chance to cement a spot in the heart of Worcester’s midfield.

“I want to be captain, play centre midfield and run the show from there,” he said.

“I will always give 120 per cent and if we are winning games I don’t care where I play.

“But I want to play in midfield and score 20 goals this season.

“I have played full-back in previous years and for whatever reason I have not gone into midfield.

“But I think I can be better in central midfield so we will see what happens.”

Worcester’s new-look squad came together for the first time on Saturday when they began pre-season training.

And with the players joint managers Snape and Lee Hughes have brought in Weir has high hopes ahead of the new campaign.

Weir added: “I have been looking forward to meeting all the new boys.

“Obviously there will be a few nervous faces but I think we can have a good season.

“I want to win the league and get to Wembley.

“That’s what I am going to be saying to the boys. I believe we’re going places this season.”
