FORMER skipper Danny Jackman says “it is only right” Tyler Weir takes over as captain after he made the “surprise” decision to remain at Worcester City.

Weir has made more than 200 appearances for the Blue and Whites and had a taste of leading the side last term.

Jackman, who was club captain before joining Redditch as player-coach this summer, believes the 26-year-old has got all the credentials required to wear the armband.

“Tyler is definitely suitable,” Jackman said.

“He knows the club inside and out and has got the best interests of the club at heart.

“I think there is only one man you can give it to. Tyler is someone who has been at the club for a long time so it is only right he gets it.”

Weir was awarded supporters’ and sponsor’s player of the season after an impressive 2016-17 campaign.

His future looked in doubt when City plummeted three levels into the Midland League Premier Division.

Weir revealed he was offered deals at two National League clubs but turned them down to stay at cash-strapped City where he said he was getting “less than half” of what he was being paid last season.

“Tyler is a very good player, especially at National League North level, so he would not have been short of offers,” Jackman said.

“It is just about whether he feels it was right or not distance-wise. He lives all the way over in Ledbury and I think it is a logistic thing for him.

“He has just had a little boy so whether he wanted to be spending too much time away from him I don’t know.

“It was a surprise but Tyler loves the club and he has got his own motives for signing which is a fantastic coup for the club to keep someone of his stature and ability.”
