THE chance to pick the brains of former Premier League frontman Lee Hughes was a “massive factor” in Dave Reynolds’ decision to sign for Worcester City.

Reynolds arrived at the Blue and Whites from Malvern Town where he scored 53 goals in all competitions last season.

His stunning strike-rate attracted interest from a number of clubs with Reynolds revealing he had “a few good offers” on the table.

But when City’s joint boss Hughes came calling the potent striker said he could not pass up the opportunity to link up with the 41-year-old.

Hughes has played in the top-flight with West Bromwich Albion and joined Coventry City in 2001 for £5million.

Alongside his managerial duties Hughes will continue to play for City in the Midland League Premier Division and Reynolds says he hopes they can form a strong partnership.

“I want to learn from him in every game,” said Malvern-based Reynolds.

“He has scored goals consistently for years so it was definitely a massive factor (in why I decided to join City).

“I am trying to pick little bits up like his movement and what he says (on the pitch) so it is exciting.

“It was definitely a good move for me to come here.

“I had a few good offers as well but with a club the size of Worcester and the fact it was local to me as well I didn’t even have to think twice.”

Reynolds was the leading scorer in the West Midlands League Premier Division last term with 51 goals.

He capped off the campaign by winning Town’s players’ player and supporters’ player-of-the-season awards.

But the 28-year-old, who netted his first goal in a City shirt in their 4-0 win over Worcester Raiders last week, insists he will be starting this campaign with a clean slate. “Yes, I did score a lot of goals last season but you are only as good as your last game,” said the ex-Dyson Perrins Academy pupil.

“Last season is in the past and I have now got to do the same again this year and score some more.

“I have (got a goal target in mind) but we will see. You have to take each game as it comes.”

Reynolds will hope to hit the back of the net when City take on Sutton Coldfield at Bromsgrove’s Victoria Ground tomorrow night (7.45pm).

Worcester then travel to Halesowen Town in their final pre-season clash on Saturday (3pm) before preparing to tackle Daventry Town at Communications Park in the Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round on Saturday, August 5.

“I am still getting used to playing with all the lads but the goals will come,” Reynolds added.

“It is important to keep getting that fitness up so we are ready for the game away at Daventry.”
