WORCESTER City's Matt Gwynne hopes to retain the number one jersey when his side host Quorn tomorrow (3pm).

The highly-rated goalkeeper, who joined from Midland League Premier Division rivals Westfields in the summer, has been kept out of the side in recent weeks by Kidderminster Harriers loanee Tom Palmer.

He made his return against Coleshill Town on Tuesday and even though Gwynne conceded three goals in a 3-3 draw he pulled off a host of impressive second-half saves.

“It felt good to be back but I was gutted with the result as it felt like a loss and conceding three goals after getting back in the team,” Gwynne said.

“I’m not that happy with my performance.

“I had a tight hamstring in the FA Cup and Tom came in and did well so kept his place.

“If I can get a run of games then my performance will start lifting again.

"There were moments in the game when I did well but overall there is still a lot I need to improve on.

"Hopefully I will improve throughout the season.

“Quorn are always a hard side to play against but I think we have enough to beat any side in this league so we will be looking to bounce back with three points definitely.

“They like to get it down and play. Every team in this league is a contest and you don’t get an easy game.

"Even the bottom sides lift their game 100 per cent against us so we are expecting a battle definitely.”

The Leicestershire visitors sit fourth from bottom but gave themselves a boost last week with a 1-0 victory at neighbours and fellow strugglers Loughborough University before beating Oadby Town 2-1 in the FA Vase.

New City signing Josh Sarmento will hope for his first City start after netting a brace as a substitute against Coleshill but skipper Tyler Weir may be a doubt after coming off injured in Tuesday’s game.

Brad Birch has returned to the midfield after his three-game ban.

The visitors did not play in midweek so have had a clear week to prepare, not that that will be much of an advantage according to City’s joint manager John Snape.

He said: “You want to play football rather than train so we’ll see how the boys go.

“We are going to re-assess as we’ve had a few knocks, bumps and bruises as we have been playing Tuesday and Saturday most of the season.

“With the players we’ve got I expect us to win our home games. Away is a bit more difficult.

“We’ve got some big characters and some players who will grow together.”
