WORCESTER City welcome back defender Mark Smith for Saturday’s trip to AFC Wulfrunians – but Mat Birley is set to miss out.

Smith, a Midland League title winner with Alvechurch last season, missed City’s 4-1 drubbing of derby rivals Stourport Swifts through work commitments but is available for selection once more.

Birley had been expected to join him but joint-boss John Snape is unlikely to risk the ex-Birmingham City man who is nearing the end of his recovery from hamstring trouble.

“We are hopeful Mat will be ready for the midweek trip to Stourport but Saturday looks a bit too soon,” said Snape.

“He has been in light training to keep him ticking over and with three games in eight days it is probably sensible to make sure he is spot on before putting him out there.

“Mark had a slight knee injury and knew he had to miss the Stourport game anyway. Hopefully that has cleared up nicely because he gives us competition for places at the back.

“He has a lot of experience and the whole squad will be needed in what is a very busy month for the team.”
