WORCESTER City survived more than 24 minutes with 10 men to win 1-0 at Coventry Sphinx in the Total Motion Midland League Premier Division.

Having lost 2-1 at Heanor Town on Wednesday, City bounced back with their third win and clean sheet in the last four games.

Former West Bromwich Albion forward Lee Hughes, Worcester's joint-manager, nodded in the only goal from a corner in the 26th minute.

City had Bekir Halil sent off on 66 minutes for an off-the-ball incident.

Midfielder Mat Birley had an effort saved before Hughes swooped soon after.

The red card put City on the back foot and keeper Nathan Vaughan denied Sphinx's Ryan Harkin before Worcester held on through a lengthy injury-time period.

City moved up to third in the table as Sporting Khalsa fell 2-1 at home to Long Eaton United.

Bromsgrove Sporting went back to the top of the table with a 1-0 home win over AFC Wulfrunians.

Worcester are five points off second-placed Coleshill Town who were without a game.
